Live To Be 150 – A Review

Welcome back!
If you missed the Barbara Walters Special Live To Be 150 that was on Tuesday night, here’s a recap.
She had a several of the leading scientists on aging and longevity discuss their various research and findings.
Aubrey D.N.J. de Grey, who wrote Ending Aging and works for the Methuselah Foundation,
Dr. David Sinclair, who talked about the benefits of Resveratrol and they even had
Dr. Robert Butler, whose book I just wrote about a few days ago: The Longevity Revolution. Ageism was also discussed.
There was some interesting discussion of research being done on replacing body parts. Apparently human bladders have been grown in the lab and used in transplants.
They talked about Calorie Restriction, which I also covered. Go figure – when I complain about people looking too skinny on the calorie restriction diet, Barbara interviews people that look great! I’ll be honest, though, all that weighing of food and strict diet doesn’t sound like much fun to me. They had a 80 year old guy on there that only eats once a day!
There was some discussion against Human Growth Hormone injections. I’m not a big fan of them either, but you can raise your HGH level more naturally and I discuss that here: Safe Alternatives to Human Growth Hormone.
The last half of the show was spent on human interest stories: Paul Newman, still racing cars at age 82; Carmen, the world’s oldest working model. She also interviewed some interesting 100+ people.
I was happy to see that I’m covering a lot of what was discussed on the show. It’s never been my goal to live to be 100+. My goal is to be healthy, happy and vital to whatever age I live to. There are some downsides to living that long.
They interviewed one woman who was 100 years old taking care of her 82 year old daughter, who had cancer (I think). The daughter ended up dying. Living way past your spouses and children is one of the pitfalls.
One guy talked about the fact that since men die younger than women, we might see more older women turning to lesbianism because of the shortage of men. Oh, come on…..
Calorie Restriction – Is It For You?

I think most of us have probably heard of the Calorie Restriction Diet as a means of anti aging. If you haven’t heard of it, I’ve already written an article about it here: Calorie Restriction and Aging. No sense in re-creating the wheel.
Read the article – there’s even a link to other resources if you are interested in exploring the Calorie Restriction concept further. There are whole organizations devoted that way of life and they swear by their results. ![]()
Frankly, their photos didn’t do much to convince me. Some of them really looked old and haggard – like they lost too much weight. The photo I have posted is from the New York Times article on Calorie Restriction. He is 36 and (at the time)has been on a low calorie diet for 6 years. He is 6 feet tall and weighs 135 pounds. Although he’s much younger than some of the other photos I’ve seen, I think my opinion of what is healthy looking will have to change.
I prefer the old bodybuilder type of diet – smaller, more nutritious meals spread out throughout the day. Not that I do that either.
Is calorie restriction for you? Be sure you do all the necessary research needed to make an informed decision.
Anti Aging Calorie Restriction In The News
September 24, 2007 by GiGi · Comments Off
Did you happen to catch the small blurb on NBC news about calorie restriction?
It mentioned the studies done on primates in the world of anti aging and how a calorie restricted diet can not only help them live longer but also live healthier lives. Of course this is based on about a 20% decrease in calories from a normal caloric diet. A pretty difficult thing to do. In fact, the scientist featured in the piece said he’s tried but can’t stay on the diet.
However, they did have one couple that had been on the diet for several years. They came on and said how healthy they feel.
No offense but they looked rather unhealthy to me! They both appeared rather gaunt and the woman definitely looked emaciated.
