Scary News About Alzheimer’s

March 20, 2008 by GiGi · 12 Comments

Welcome back!

alzheimersA new report has just been released by the Alzheimer’s Association that states that 1 out of every 8 Baby Boomers will develop Alzheimer’s.

How scary is that?? Over 10 million people will develop the disease that is now considered the 7th deadliest disease in the country.

What gender does Alzheimer’s affect the most? It looks like women are at greater risk than men.

It’s going to be a huge strain on the health care system, which isn’t doing too well to begin with. And most people don’t have long-term care insurance.

Plus the government has cut spending on Alzheimer’s. They currently only spend $640 million on Alzheimer’s research, compared to $5 billion on cancer and 3 billion on heart disease. That will make it tougher to develop new drugs to help with the disease.

You don’t want to wait until a new drug is developed, do you? Turns out, there may be a connection between cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s, which means diet and exercise may be helpful in prevention.

Is there any Good News?

Some think that the predictions may be too high. Baby boomers are healthier, more active, better educated and wealthier than their parents.

There are other studies that have been done with supplements and mental acuity exercises that seem promising. I’ll be writing about those later, so be sure to subscribe to the blog email updates to find out what you can do to help stave off this deadly disease.
