Here’s an interesting video with some interviews of various vendors at an Anti Aging Trade Show in Las Vegas last month.
Dr. James Maschino was interviewed and talked about his free anti aging assessment questionaire, but I can’t seem to find it online. Let me know if you know where it is.
Here’s another opinion about the tradeshow - comparing the vendors to “Snake Oil Salesmen“. Although I agree there was probably a lot of that there, the columnist apparently didn’t find (or look for) any legitimate anti aging practitioners or researchers.
I really can’t give a qualified opinion as I didn’t attend the tradeshow, but I’m always a little skeptical when I see such a strong opinion.
Big Drug Companies Buy Into Anti Aging

We knew it was coming….the anti aging pill.
GlaxoSmithKline is paying $720 million for Sirtris, a company that deals in sirtuins research.
What are Sirtuins?
According to the National Institute of Health: “sirtuins are a group of proteins linked to aging, metabolism and stress tolerance in several organisms. Among the many genes that have been shown to affect aging in model organisms, sirtuin genes are unique in that their activity level is positively correlated with lifespan (i.e. they are anti-aging genes). Sirtuins are a druggable class of enzymes (i.e. amenable to intervention by small molecules) that could have beneficial effects on a variety of human diseases. In view of the many functions of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) in cells, this review focuses on its role in regulating important aspects of mitochondrial biology. Mitochondria have been linked to aging, and also to diseases of aging. Thus, sirtuins might provide a key link between mitochondrial dysfunction, aging and metabolic disease. ”
In actuality, Sirtris is doing research for diabetic therapy, not anti-aging, although from what I’ve read, that won’t be long in coming. They are also researching resveratrol, using it as a drug for a rare muscle disorder. Resveratrol has widely been touted in the news for its life extension properties.
It will take a while, but the anti aging pill is definitely coming.
Good news….or bad?
Vitamin K - Who Knew?
Vitamin K has been known as the forgotten vitamin - just check your current multivitamin bottle - is Vitamin K listed? Probably not.
Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin, known as the blood clotting vitamin and is found in cabbage, cauliflower, spinach and other green leafy vegetables, cereals, soybeans, and other vegetables.
A deficiency in Vitamin K was thought to be very rare and conventional wisdom thought you could get all you needed from your diet.
Recent studies have proved otherwise. Not only that, most foods thought to be rich in vitamin K have shown to have less vitamin K than previously thought.
Although it’s a fat soluble vitamin, it is not stored in the body the way Vitamins A,D and E are. That means we need to replenish it daily. Plus, scientists have discovered that most foods thought to be rich in Vitamin K actually have less than they thought.
There are 3 forms of Vitamin K: K1, K2 and K3. K1 is the form from vegetables. K2 is the one with surprising benefits. Unfortunately, you get that from fermented food products like cheese and natto. It’s also synthesized from Vitamin K1 by the bacteria that line the gastrointestinal tract. People with gastrointestinal tract problems are likely to be deficient in Vitamin K as are people on extended treatments of antibiotics.
New Benefits From Vitamin K2
According to some new research from Longevity Medicine Review, K2 may be shown to:
- help prevent varicose veins
- regulate energy metabolism
- improve glucose tolerance
- improve insulin sensitivity
- regulate calcium in the bones and arteries
- prevent calcification of skin’s elastin, possibly preventing wrinkles
Issues To Be Aware Of
Those who have experienced stroke, cardiac arrest, and those prone to blood clotting should not take Vitamin K2 without first consulting their physician.
Vitamin K2 may react adversely with anticoagulation drugs, and therefore should not be taken by those on blood-thinning medications.
Vitamin K is essential to build strong bones and helps promote heart health. For several years, evidence has shown that most people don’t get enough vitamin K to protect their health through the foods they eat.
Anti Aging Toothpaste - Going Too Far?
April 23, 2008 by GiGi · Leave a Comment
It seems like every time we turn around, there’s a new anti aging product coming out. Not surprising, considering how many of us Baby Boomers there are - it’s only natural for a company to cash in on that market segment. But anti aging toothpaste? Really?
I was once told by a dentist years ago that it’s the actual act of brushing your teeth that is the real benefit. What you put on your toothbrush doesn’t really matter. Don’t know if that’s really true, but looking at the ingredients in this anti aging toothpaste makes me want to care.
So What’s In Anti Aging Toothpaste?
A mixture of bovine extracted bimolecular proteins containing, placenta, membrane, tissue and organic cells - WHAT?? Why would I want to brush my teeth with that??
Also Yeast containing B complex, Vitamin C, Rathania and Johanniskraut oil, Kiesel acid, fluoride, aromatic oils, and sea salt. It also contains parabens, chemicals used as preservatives, but then so do most other toothpastes. It also has hormones, vitamins, RNAs (ribonucleic acids).
What Are The Benefits of Anti Aging Toothpaste?
According to the manufacturer, it helps the mouth to repair and regenerate all of its tissues, keeping teeth and gums healthy, improving blood supply and saliva production and helping to prevent bad breath and general infections.
It also prevents bleeding gums, infections, inflammations, paradontosis, loose teeth, bad breath and pain - but then, so does regular brushing with any toothpaste.
Sorry, I won’t be giving you the link to this one - you can Google it under “anti aging toothpaste”.
