Are You Making These Health Mistakes?

health mistakesPrevention Magazine recently came out with the 14 Worst Health Mistakes.  Geared toward women,  it still seems like men could benefit from these, too.  How many of these health mistakes are YOU making?

There were some of the normal health boo boos we all make sometimes such as not getting enough sleep, forgetting to floss, thinking salads are healthier than they really are, not weight lifting, not using enough sunscreen and ignoring your aches and pains.

But there were also several new ones I didn’t realize (or maybe I just didn’t think about) that I found interesting:

  • Rocking out while you work out – this may not pertain quite as much to those of us over 50 that don’t routinely listen to ipods, but obviously if you’re in a crowded gym, you’d have to be cranking that thing up pretty loud to hear anything.  Anything over 85 decibels can cause hearing loss.  Take it from us old farts that went to way too many loud concerts when we were teenagers – hearing loss is not fun!
  • Driving with your windows down – especially if you commute to work in a city.  Apparently, the exposure to air pollutants is quite high – a health risk to your lungs second only to smoking.
  • Watch your friends health habits – if you have friends that gain weight, you are 71% more likely to gain weight too – especially if they are the same gender.  The same holds true about drinking.  Texas researchers found that people were 82% more likely to be heavy drinkers when their coworkers held liberal views about alcohol.
  • If you are having surgery – check your surgeon’s track record.  An example:  heart valve—replacement patients were 44 % more likely to die when the procedures were performed by less experienced doctors. So be sure you ask a lot of questions about their experience.

You may want to catch the article to read the rest.  If nothing else, it might be a wake up call to health mistakes you may know about, but forget to do on a regular basis.

  • Do You Believe These Vitamin Myths?
Posted on Thursday, March 12th, 2009 in Supplements – Comments: (2)
A recent article in Fitness Magazine talks about multi vitamins and other supplements. Having done a lot of online research for my various articles, I tend to take everything I read or see on TV with a grain (or pound) of salt. See this article: My Rant About ResearchBut I do find it refreshing that after years of reading “You don’t need to take vitamins – you should get everything you need from your food”, the mainstream media is finally starting to admit that it’s impossible to get all the nutrients you need from food sources – at least in this modern world.Remember that this is Fitness Magazine -geared towards women and usually younger women – so they are assuming you are trying to diet and exercise and lead a somewhat healthy lifestyle. Here’s some interesting facts they came up with: Almost half the women under age 40 don’t take a multivitamin (according to the CDC).
  • Do You Know An Easy Way To Boost Your Brain Power?
Posted on Friday, March 6th, 2009 in Fitness – Comments: (1)
Yes, doing crossword puzzles and “mental games” can increase your brain power, but there’s another way to also boost your brain:EXERCISE!If you ever needed another good reason to exercise, I’ve got one for you:Exercise makes your brain bigger.Actually this isn’t entirely accurate. To be more specific, exercise was found to increase brain size slightly, but far more important, it increased “spatial reasoning.”This is the ability to recognize patterns, remember phrases, numbers, and so-on. This was discovered by researchers at the Universities of Chicago and Pittsburgh. It is also one of the most important factors to the prevention of Alzheimer’s and dementia. From Jon Benson:”My mom suffered with dementia the last ten years of her life. But unlike most dementia patients she was fully functional thanks to exercise. She drove and had a mind that was unbelievably sharp right up until an accident injured her beyond the ability to exercise.
  • Exercise Anywhere!
Posted on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Fitness – Comments: (1)
I hate exercising.  There, I said it.I do it for the benefits I get from it, but I’ve never really been a fan.  There are  those that LOVE exercising and couldn’t start their day without a trip to the gym or a good long run – I’m not one of them. The way some people are yo-yo dieters, I’m a yo-yo exerciser – always finding some new gimmick or fad that motivates me to keep moving.Recently, the people at Nuru Planet sent me a small deck of cards called “Exercise Anywhere”.  Here’s what they say about it:”Exercise Anywhere is for the man or woman who wants to look good and feel great without having to hit the local gym. Your body weight provides you with all of the resistance you need to burn calories and tone your muscle.”Sounds great! What I wasn’t expecting was the depth of information those little cards provide.
  • Not All Resveratrol Is Created Equal – My Bad
Posted on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 in Supplements – Comments: (0)
I first started talking about Resveratrol about a year ago.  Then in July of last year, I did this post Resveratrol – A True Anti Aging Antioxidant.Although the information in that post was correct, there has been additional information discovered since then.  I mentioned in the article that trans-resveratrol is being studied more.  In fact, trans-resveratrol is the type of product you should be looking for on the label. There are two types of resveratrol – trans and cis. The great benefits you read about ; antioxidant, cardiovascular and longevity benefits were tested using the trans type. They didn’t get the same results from the cis type.Additionally, the term Resveratrol is used extensively on the internet and by most distributors of low potency resveratrol products. Without a clear label declaration, it is not possible to know which of the two forms of resveratrol (cis- or trans-) is in these types of products – so look for trans on the label.
  • White House Organic Garden – An Anti Aging Role Model
Posted on Friday, March 20th, 2009 in Nutrition – Comments: (1)
You may have read that Michelle Obama is planting an organic garden of vegetables and fruits. The first vegetable garden the White House has had since Eleanor Roosevelt.Although the garden will supply the family meals, the greater intent is to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern.Fifth graders from a local school will help with the planting and tending of the garden.Politics aside, you’ll have to agree it’s great to see a vibrant, healthy first family that knows the value of good nutrition and exercise. What a great anti aging role model – I, for one, hopes that this is a “trickle down” theory that works! You can click on the small map of the garden to go to a larger version. Here is the original news story: White House Vegetable Garden(Be careful if you go there not to get side tracked into reading about Franklin Roosevelt’s affair with Lucy Mercer.

Getting Old Does Not Equal Poor Sex

better sexAs a single woman who has done my fair share of dating the last 10 years, I’m amazed at the amount of men over 50 that think it’s perfectly normal to have a diminished sex drive just because they are getting older.

I’ve also known women in my age group who think it’s okay not to give sex any priority at all in their lives. Read more
