alcohol-addictionGreat news from the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine :

New research has revealed that using hormone replacement therapy as well as other anti aging treatments, such as nutraceutical supplementation can help prevent depression, anxiety and insomnia, which seem to be precursors to drug and alcohol addiction.

From what I can gather from the article (and trust me- it’s pretty dry stuff!), the studies were only related to women.  Apparently women who have low levels of progesterone (which is common in menopausal women) generally have increased levels of anxiety and insomnia.  When their brain chemistry is balanced with the use of bio-identical hormone replacement and nutraceutical supplements, the craving for drugs and alcohol diminishes.

What is even more fascinating is that this treatment works on not only on middle age women but on any woman who may be suffering from drug and alcohol addiction which is caused by hormonal imbalance.

They gave some interesting case studies – one was a woman who had began drinking alcohol when she 12. By the time she started the treatments at only age 21, she was consuming 2 liters of vodka a day, plus Oxycontin and Xanax! She had failed 8 month-long treatment programs.

When they took her history, they discovered her hormones had been out of balance since she started her periods at age 12.  When Susan’s progesterone deficiency was treated along with the multiple hormonal and nutritional deficiencies caused by nine years of alcohol and drug abuse, her craving for both drugs and alcohol stopped. Susan has been drug and alcohol free for almost three years.

The implications of this are profound. Imagine all the years wasted in drug and alcohol treatment programs that could have been saved if proper hormone testing had been done.

Obviously, this won’t apply to ALL drug and alcohol addictions, but apparently about 40% of the addicted middle aged females have a hormone imbalance that causes the initial symptoms of anxiety, attention deficit disorders, depression, insomnia and fatigue which then lead to self medicating with drugs and alcohol.

Something to think about.

The good news: Anti aging treatments may improve the quality of life in many different and unexpected ways.

I think that addiction is a major issue and must be handled. Thanks for your article. It was very interesting. I also think that in drug rehab you should handle the reason why you used drugs in the first place. This way you won’t go back to drugs later.
