From WebMD – Six Super Foods Every Woman Needs

More Super Foods Lists. You may have seen my previous article on Super Foods. If not, here it is:

Super Foods or Supplements?

In the article from WebMD, here is the Reader’s Digest version of 6 Super Foods Every Woman Needs:

1. Low fat yogurt
2. Fatty Fish
3. Beans
4. Tomatoes
5. Vitamin D fortified low fat milk or orange juice

MILK???!!  REALLY??

I’ve seen a lot of so-called Super Foods lists and although they vary somewhat, I can’t remember a single one that suggests Milk as a super food.

Not that I’m necessarily anti-milk, but with all the awful stuff you hear about it lately and all the people with allergies to it, surely they could have found something else.

The reason they picked milk was because it’s fortified with Vitamin D. Which leads to the age-old question, if it’s okay to “fortify” your foods, what’s wrong with supplements?

Vitamin D is important, more specifically Vitamin D3 (see my article Vitamin D3 and Aging), but there are plenty of other sources besides milk. The Fatty Fish #2 on their list has much more Vitamin D than milk. A little sunshine every day works wonders – but I won’t go into that debate here.

According to some researchers, dietary sources of Vitamin D don’t supply the amounts of Vitamin D3 you really need to do any good.

I can see a more comprehensive article on Vitamin D is in order. I’m adding it to the list.  Anything else I should add?
