Yay! My favorite foods for cooking are also great anti aging foods: garlic and onions!

Most people have heard about garlic’s anti aging benefits. Garlic has been found to be helpful with high blood pressure and also several types of cancer – especially stomach cancer. Garlic also supports the cardiovascular system by lowering blood lipids, preventing platelet aggregation, prolonging clotting time, improving blood viscosity and preventing age-related vascular changes.

Both garlic and onions have a long history of use as antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial agents.

Onions are also helpful with lung conditions and problems.

Apparently, the sulfer-rich phytochemicals are what makes them great for all their anti aging benefits – so the stronger the smell, the better the benefit.  By the way, that strong compound is only released by cutting and smashing (see my comment about cooking with garlic here).

As for onions, varieties such as Western Yellow, New York Bold, and Northern Red onions, along with shallots, have the richest concentration of flavonoids, such as quercetin and phenols, providing them with the greatest antioxidant and anti-cancer activity.

So cry away while you’re chopping all those strong onions and know that you’re getting some great anti aging benefits from them!

Unfortunately, there are a few poor souls that either don’t like or can’t handle garlic and/or onions. For those people, I’ll have to recommend supplements. Quercetin has been known to be effective when taken in conjuction with fish oil.

Good to hear. I make garlic and onions a part of almost every meal I cook. I particularly love the consistency garlic adds to meals and it really helps to thicken out curries, bolognese and more.

This sounds great for anti-aging, but will do nothing for my love life LOL. Just kidding. My wife and I both enjoy garlic and onions in our foods. Peppers too. The spicier the better. Great post.
