Green Tea Extract and Parkinson’s
January 12, 2008 by GiGi
Welcome back!
Did you know that nearly one million people suffer with Parkinson’s disease?! And, as the population ages, this number will too.
Parkinson’s is caused by cell death that affects the neurons that contain pigmented dopamine. This, in turn, impairs movement and balance.
Researchers have found that green tea extract may protect neurons from being damaged. Green Tea has long been known for its antioxidant properties. The researchers performed a study done on rodents to see how it affected them.
They divided the male rodents into six different groups. The researchers used a neurotoxin to induce damage done in their neurons. Different doses of green tea polyphenol and the neurotoxin were assigned to each group, while one group had neither.
The researchers found that the effects of the neurotoxin were protected by the green tea polyphenol. The higher dose was a bigger protection than the lower doses that were given. They also found that there were 3.7 times more neurons in the rodents that received the green tea extract!
They also found that the green tea extract affected the increase in reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide levels, and lipid peroxidation.
In conclusion, after reviewing this study, researchers believe that green tea polyphenol treatment (GTP) may protect the neurons of Parkinson’s disease.
However, to get the maximum benefits of green tea, you’d have to guzzle copious amounts. A better alternative:
