Prostate Health – What You Need To Know

October 3, 2008 by GiGi

Welcome back!

Anti aging isn’t all about women – this article is for men. If you are a  woman – Pass it along to the man in your life.

Here’s some interesting news: most men know more about the female reproductive system than they do about their own prostate health. And yet, prostate problems are quite common in men, especially older men.

Since the chances are you will probably have some type of prostate problem in your life, you might as well learn a little bit about it.

After the age of 40, the prostate gland starts to grow larger in most men, sometimes creating urinary problems.

Prostate Cancer Rates Are Rising

Why? One of the reasons is because men are living longer. And the older they get, the larger the prostate becomes.

Another theory is based on lifestyle.  Men who eat diets rich in fruits and vegetables have lower rates of cancer than those that eat poor diets high in saturated fat and red meat.

Also, testosterone production decreases as you age and DHT from testosterone helps to control growth of the prostate.

What Can You Do To Prevent Prostate Problems?

1. If you are over 40, you should be getting a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test every year along with a digital rectal exam.

2. Eat a healthy diet – high in fruits and vegetables, low in saturated fats and red meat. (We’re always back to the healthy diet, aren’t we?)

3. There are some nutritional supplements that have been proven helpful – with some warnings.

IMPORTANT New Studies About Saw Palmetto

You may have heard about Saw Palmetto as being the supplement of choice in treating an enlarged Prostate.  New studies have recently revealed that this supplement, while being effective in killing off  cancerous prostate cells, also kills off healthy prostate cells! So, if you don’t already have prostate cancer, do not take saw palmetto.

So What Can I Take For Prostate Health?

Studies have shown there are 10 nutrients/supplements that are helpful in maintaining prostate health. Unfortunately, the quality of supplements is important and many of the supplements sold in the U.S. are not of the same standard as European supplements.

Here are the 10 ingredients and recommendations:

1. Boron - found in red wine, raisins, peanuts, apples, pears, peaches, oranges, grapes, lima beans, and peanut butter.

2. Daidzein – found in soybeans, legumes and peas. Note: soybeans also contain a more toxic ingredient, so peas would be the better choice here.

3. Grape Seed extract

4. Green Tea

5. Lycopene – think tomato sauce

6. Vitamin E – however, you need the type that contains both gamma and alpha tocopherol, not just alpha tocopherol, which is what is found in most dietary supplements

7. Selenium – hard to get enough without a dietary supplement

8. Kohki leaf – good for bladder function

9. Pygeum africanum- an endangered species tree in Africa. It is now being farmed for supplement use.

10. Nettle Root

You can read more about these ingredients here: Good and Bad News About Prostate Health.

Check with your doctor before taking any supplement, but a good supplement with the ingredients listed above is:

Great article GiGi. I knew that lycopene and selenium could help but was unaware there were so many other things.

Here are some more tips known to be very effective in preventing and treating prostate disorders naturally and without the side effects of medications and surgery:
    - Regular exercise including sex – yes, it’s good for the prostate!
    - Making adjustments in lifestyle and eating habits such as limiting the intake of decongestants or antihistamines and avoiding sugars, alcohol, coffee and processed foods.
    - Additional types of food that promotes a healthy prostate: Sunflower seeds, flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds, vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables, fish and seafood (especially oysters).
