100th Blog Post Winner

August 28, 2008 by GiGi

Welcome back!

Before I announce the winner of the 100th Blog Post contest, I want to thank all the people that submitted suggestions via email. Many of you had great suggestions and I’ll be incorporating those ideas in future blog posts.

But there can only be one winner…

The winner of the 100th blog post contest is…..

Pam Hoffman! Of Internet Marketing Seminar List.

Pam actually came up with several ideas – two of them I may mesh together into a blog post.

And the Prize is: A $25 Amazon gift certificate!  Hope you enjoy it, Pam and thanks for the suggestions!

What was her suggestion? You’ll find out on my next blog post!

Before I go, I’d like to share a story sent in by one of my readers about his grandfather who lived until he was 91:

My grandpa who was born in 1875 passed away in Dec 1966 . I do not know whether he had the benefit of the wealth of knowledge we all have access to these days on maintaining good health to live long.

In retrospect, I am amazed to recollect, how, perhaps by intuitive prodding, he led a life that was simple in all respects.

  • He was brilliant during his scholastic days,
  • very conscientious when he presided over the districts and sessions courts during British Indian colonial days with a formidable reputation for incorruptibility and judgements which were almost always upheld during appeals,
  • was steadfast in isolating himself from frequent intermingling during social gatherings as per the norms of his calling,
  • was far from ostentatious in his living, reading elevating literature and philosophical journals after retirement,
  • bought properties the earnings from which he shared among the poor who worked in the lands,
  • set apart a very sizable portion of his assets for charity,
  • bequeathed benefits to not only his legal heirs but to relatives who were in need and to servants who were at hand during his later years,
  • did help people who were in dire circumstances and forgave them when they failed to return the loans that they obtained,
  • followed his faith in religion with minimum fuss,
  • ate just enough and just those things that gave him the needed nutrition and energy like unpolished red rice, whole wheat preparations, bananas, sapota,  papaya – yields from his small garden – raisins and honey.
  • Woke up early and went to bed invariably after the 9 PM news broadcast.
  • Strolling inside the compound of the house or taking a walk while in the village were his later day exercise while he used to play tennis when in service and bridge with his friends for recreation.
  • He was never jealous of any one nor did he hate anybody.
  • Jibes from others on his frugal habits did not affect him in any manner whatsoever.
  • Not the least is his quality of accepting things stoically. When he became aware that further medication would be of no avail, he told his personal physician to stop administering drugs in an attempt to prolong his existence.

A remarkable man indeed.

Thank you for the opportunity for me to recall with fond memories of my dear grand-father.

Ramachandra Vasudevan

Hi there GiGi – I think I’m a little late to the party, but I’d like to wish you congratulations on your 100th. I am rapidly closing in on mine as well (I think I’m at 91).

I wanted to tell you…..my wife’s Grandmother passed away last year at the ripe old age of 102. Although her life in the final stages was quite difficult, she was an incredible woman, and one for which I am so grateful to have known. In my estimation, beyond her “piss and vinegar” if you’ll pardon the vulgarity, I think what kept her going for so long was a life of good food habits. She was passionately interested in raising and growing her own food long before it was trendy to do so.

Beyond that, believe it or not, she had a shot of whiskey every morning in her coffee, all the way until her final days. While this is certainly not exactly in the longetivity plan for most of us, I have to say…..it sure did work for her. :)

Thank you again for all of your hard work on this subject. Your articles are always a pleasure.
