CoenzymeQ10- Do You REALLY Know the Benefits?

August 22, 2008 by GiGi

Welcome back!

This is a continuation in the series Should You Take Anti Aging Supplements?.

Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10, has been around a while and no doubt you’ve heard about it’s heart healthy benefits. If you are over the age of 40 or are taking a statin drug, CoQ10 simply MUST be a part of your supplementation program. Here are a few basics about this anti aging supplement and some new facts, too.

CoQ10 is crucial in the energy cycle in your cell. It works with an enzyme in the mitochondria to produce energy and is also a powerful antioxidant. Research has discovered that people with heart failure, cancers, neurological diseases, and a host of other conditions have lower CoQ10 levels.

Statin drugs interfere with your body’s production of CoQ10, so if you are taking a statin drug for high cholesterol, you should be supplementing with CoenzmeQ10.

So What? I’m Healthy! Why Do I Need CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 is produced naturally in your body while you are young, but gradually slows down as you age. If you are over 40, chances are you may have a deficiency.

You may be healthy now, but heart disease is still the #1 killer. CoQ10 has proven to be beneficial to a whole host of diseases and problems. Studies have been done and some benefits noted in these areas:

  • Breast cancer
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Migraines
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s
  • Diabetes
  • Periodontal Disease

Apparently, there have even been some studies done on topical use – look for CoQ10 to start coming out in your anti aging creams and lotions!

How Much Should I Take?

It appears from all the research, that CoQ10 is safe and effective. However, long term studies of people taking high doses has not been done.

A safe starting recommendation is 30 mg, taken 3 times a day. Of course, talking to your physician is always recommended. He may actually increase the dose depending upon your own health history.

Ubiquinol CoQ10-H2

It’s important to note that there is new research being done on discoveries of new bioavailable forms of supplements. One such discovery is Ubiquinol, a reduced form of CoQ10.

Some are touting that these new formulations are much more effective – you get higher benefits at much lower doses. Others say not enough research has been done yet. They ARE more expensive – the decision is yours. If you’ve been taking regular CoQ10 with good results, you might want to try the new, improved Ubiquinol.

Here are two choices for you.

I found Dr. Sinatra last year and have been taking his CoQ10 product daily. the best thing about this productis that I get my CoQ10, fish Oil, Vitamine B and others all in the same pill. Its great ! Give it a try.
