Longevity Medicine Review has posted an interview they did with a reknowned anti aging doctor, Dr. Marios Kyriazis from England. He wrote The Anti Aging Plan.

He answered many important questions regarding aging and anti aging. You can read the whole interview here: Kyriazis Interview. Here are some highlights:

What Are The Causes of Aging?

Dr. Kyriazis says that aging is 50% genetic and 50% environmental. I’ve heard it was only 25% heredity. Environmental causes would be those things that cause free radicals and oxidation, although glycosylation (glucose or other molecules attaching to protein) and AGEs play a far bigger role than we thought.

How Do You Slow or Reverse the Aging Process?

He recommends a combination of different therapies - DHEA and carnosine being two prominent ones. He also said hormone therapy depends on whether someone has a deficiency - see my Hormone Testing article.

Diet and exercise (although not just ANY exercise - he has specific ones listed in his book) are crucial as a lifestyle change. Taking supplements won’t work without the proper lifestyle to begin with.

Things to note: Results from taking anti aging supplements are not instantaneous. Most of them work long-term and are preventative in nature.

What Are The Best Ways To Improve Mental Performance?

He recommends a combination of mental stimulation, mental exercises and supplements such as hydergine, ginkgo biloba, vincopocetine, and bacopa. He also mentioned taking acetylcarnosine and alpha lipoic acid. It’s better to change your supplement regime every few months.

I have also read that you should not be taking the same supplements without “taking a break” from them for a while, as your body builds an immunity to them.

Mental State and Physical Health

There’s a definite relationship between a positive mental attitude and our immune system. Research has shown cases where people using positive thinking were able to survive cancer given very low odds.

He encourages people to explore their own anti aging and health therapies. Try something for a couple of months and if it’s not working, then try something else. Listen to what your body tells you.

….interesting. I never heard of “taking a break” from the supplements that you take. I wonder how valid that is

    Hi Lynne,

Actually “taking a break” or “cycling” supplements is quite common in the bodybuilding field and those that take hgh supplements. You’d be surprised how knowledgeable bodybuilders are about nutrition and supplements.

Basically, it’s okay to take most vitamins everyday (although I generally skip a day here and there), but when you are talking about hormones and some of the amino acids, you should cycle them for best results.

There are several good articles about it. Here is one I think answers it the best:
