I discovered recently that I have high blood pressure - WHAT?? How could that happen? I do everything right! Well, almost everything - turns out I’m genetically predisposed to it. Thanks, Dad. So now the search is on - how to lower blood pressure naturally. I’m not a big fan of doctors and prescription drugs.
Medical disclaimer - I am NOT recommending that anyone try to reduce their blood pressure by taking supplements instead of going to see their doctor. I am not a medical professional and I do not dispense medical advice.
Most older Americans will have elevated blood pressure sometime in their life, thanks to their sedentary lifestyles, poor diets and stressful lives. Boy, not me - I exercise regularly (mostly), eat a healthy diet (usually), and lead a generally stress-free live (by most people’s standards). Just when you think you’ve got it all covered, your parents are factored in.
I read recently in Smart Publications, that women with high blood pressure have three times the risk of dying from a heart attack; almost four times the risk of dying from a stroke; about three times the risk of developing heart failure; and about three times the risk of developing kidney disease. Even dementia has been associated with high blood pressure. Yikes! Time to do something about it!
There are side effects of hypertension drugs including gout, insomnia, depression and fatigue.
Reduce Your Blood Pressure Naturally
The first steps to take:
- Quit smoking
- Exercise
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Eat a healthy diet
- Reduce stress
Okay, got that covered. In addition, you should:
- Get enough essential fatty acids (fish oil supplement/eat cold water fish several times a week)
- Correct for insulin resistance by cutting out refined carbohydrates (sugars, white flour, etc)
- Take nutritional supplements that have been recommended to lower blood pressure (see below)
They also recommended taking EDTA oral chelation to get rid of heavy metal toxicity and calcium buildup, but frankly there’s some controversy about that with some people recommending DMSA for oral chelation, so for now I think I’ll pass on that and see how the other supplements work. Besides, that controversy sounds like a whole other blog post.
I’m not going to go into a detailed list of these herbs, you can read about them in the Lower Your Blood Pressure article. Here is a list of the recommended supplements and some sources I’ve found for them:
- Hawthorn
- Eclipta alba
- Green coffee bean extract
- Rhodiola extract
- Grape skin extract
- Rosemary extract
- Salvia miltiorrhiza
- Taurine
The sources I’ve found don’t have all the ingredients in them, but they do have some. I’ll be giving them a try and will let you know the results.

Hi there GiGi - great article and summary of the options for getting blood pressure under control. I recently read that they are now prescribing blood pressure medication to children - I can’t imagine that the side effects will be a good thing at such a young age. Some kids are of course going to get it through heredity, but I hope that the prescriptions are absolute last resorts, for their sake.
Thanks for the great article, and good luck with your condition!
