Consumer Labs recently released its annual survey of popular dietary supplements. This survey is conducted among their newsletter subscribers. The sample included over 6,000 respondents and most of them took multiple supplements. So what are the most popular supplements among the people that take supplements?
Fish Oil was the winner, with 74% of the respondents taking it. It was followed closely (72%) by multivitamins, which actually decreased slightly last year.
Among the other popular supplements were:
- CoQ10 – 55% (slight increase)
- Calcium – 51.2% (actually a decrease)
- Vitamin D – 47% (a 30% increase)
- Probiotics – 30.4% (up 25% )
- Resveratrol – 19.4% – (up 66% from the year before!)
Interesting note about Resveratrol – men were 50% more likely to take it over women.
Other noteworthy information: online stores were the most popular place to purchase supplements, taking a 44% share. The next most common place to buy supplements was a health food store (33.5%), followed by a vitamin store (27.2%), mail order catalogue (25.9%) and so on.
Of the people that bought supplements in a grocery store, Trader Joe’s was the most popular. For catalogue and online purchases, Puritan’s Pride and Swanson’s were the most popular.
How did you fare with this list? I don’t take calcium or probiotics, but I take everything else. And I buy almost everything online.
