There are some that believe that if “some is good, more is always better”, but that may not be the case with Resveratrol supplementation.
New studies show that all the benefits of resveratrol can be achieved at a much smaller dose than previously thought.
Of course, these studies were done on mice, so no one is sure yet how that will translate to humans, but it IS promising.
Previously, most of the research on resveratrol was done at mega doses. There was also a volunteer study done with humans who agreed to take mega doses of Resveratrol (more than 500 mg). Some of them did experience some side effects that included abnormal blood tests, anemia, diarrhea, anxiety, and over-thinning of the blood.
In this recent study with mice, some mice were put on calorie restriction and some were given low doses (the human equilavent of about 20 mg.) of resveratrol. The results of the two groups were basically the same showing a 90% reduction in age-related cardiac problems.
As one of the researchers stated:
“Thus, resveratrol at doses that can be readily achieved through dietary supplementation in humans is as effective as calorie restriction in opposing the majority of age-related transcriptional alterations in the aging heart,” the authors write. “Because the collection of such alterations in gene expression is a biomarker of aging, our results imply that similar to calorie restriction, middle-age onset resveratrol supplementation at low doses is likely a robust intervention in the retardation of cardiac aging.”
One problem with resveratrol is that it has a activation life of about 9-10 hours, which means you should be taking it twice a day to keep it active in the body.
One of the other issues with supplements is bio availability. In other words, is the right amount of the supplement actually IN the pill and how much of it is getting into your bloodstream? The resveratrol compound is very sensitive to air and light and will break down if exposed to them – a common problem with most packaging processes.
Here’s a company that makes a low dose of resveratrol (also with grape seed extract added) and has their product encapusulated in an oxygen-free, nitrogen rich environment. They also have the capsules liquid filled which makes it more bio available.
