I found a post that makes a lot of sense to me – and I think it will to you, too. Now, she’s a mom and her concern is how much sunscreen to put on her kids, but all of her reasoning will apply to anyone.
Again, I’m not suggesting you go against your doctor’s advice, but you might want to share this post with him/her.

Thanks for sharing. I just have to put on sunscreen anyway than have my skin get burned.
Thanks for the tips on the natural sunscreen without the nasty chemicals. But I’ve read recently that most sunscreens don’t protect us from getting skin cancer, only from getting burnt. Have you read about this? What is the best alternative?
There are other ways to get skin cancer other than exposure to the sun. Sunscreens can only help you from getting burned. It’s the long term damage done by getting sunburned that can cause skin cancer. It’s possible to get skin cancer from burns we got in our teens. So, no, sunscreen can’t protect against cancer, just the cancer-causing effects of sunburn or sun damage. Hope that makes sense – you should still be using a quality sunscreen that has the right sunscreen protection.
