Good News About Prostate Cancer and Green Tea Extract
July 2, 2009 by GiGi
Welcome back!
A new study has been released that links green tea extract with helping to slow progression of prostate cancer.
If you remember, I talked about prostate cancer and green tea in this article:
Prostate Health – What You Need To Know
This new study was conducted on 26 men, aged 41 to 72 years. they had all been diagnosed with prostate cancer and scheduled for radical prostatectomy. The men consumed four capsules per day of the green tea extract, equivalent to 12 cups of tea, until the day before surgery. The average supplementation period was 34.5 days.
Findings showed a significant reduction in serum levels of HGF, VEGF and PSA after treatment, with some patients demonstrating reductions in levels of greater than 30 percent, according to the researchers. (Those initials are for growth factors that are indicators of metastatic disease.)
Results of a recent year-long clinical trial conduced by researchers in Italy demonstrated that consumption of green tea polyphenols reduced the risk of developing prostate cancer in men with high-grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN).
A more randomized study will need to be done, but this is promising news indeed.
“There is reasonably good evidence that many cancers are preventable, and our studies using plant-derived substances support the idea that plant compounds found in a healthy diet can play a role in preventing cancer development and progression,” said Cardelli, the scientist in charge of the study.
What Should You Look For When Purchasing Green Tea Extract
Look for a standardized extract that is 90% total polyphenols. For a green tea extract standardized for 80 percent polyphenols and 55 percent EGCG, a daily dose of 300 to 400 mg green tea extracts is recommended. Some green tea extracts may have as little as 15 percent polyphenols, so read the label.
Be careful of the caffeine level some green tea extracts.
Scientists also conclude that tea extracts are better to be taken between meals rather than during the meal in order to avoid the decrease of iron absorption.
I found one that has 98% Polyphenols and is 500 mg. so you only need one per day. And reasonably priced!

Green Tea Extract

I think this is great news for men. It gives you something concrete to do for your own health instead of the ‘eat well and exercise’ type of advice.

Quite right. To add to your great post, here’s what makes green tea a much healthier option than any other tea: The difference between regular black tea which is most familiar to Americans and green tea lies in the processing. Black tea is fermented whereas geen tea is not. This means that antioxidants are left in green tea untouched, and this helps prevent numerous diseases, including (and perhaps especially) prostate cancer.

We actually put organic green tea straight in the blender and make smoothies with it – that way you get 0 caffeine and you get all the nutrients and enzymes without damaging them from cooking. It\’s great!
