New Study: Multivitamins May Keep You Young
June 15, 2009 by GiGi
Welcome back!
This is great news! Researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Health have found that people taking multivitamins on a regular basis tend to have a younger biological age.
This has to do with our friends, the telomeres. You may remember I mentioned them in this post: Anti Aging Telomere Treatment. There’s a more detailed explanation there, but basically telomeres are the end parts of chromosomes that shorten due to oxidative stress and inflammation and are thought to be the mechanism that causes aging in our body.
It turns out that people that take multivitamins on a daily basis had telomeres that were 5.1% longer than those that did not take multivitamins. This study was done on women age 35-74. (Again with the women?? Why aren’t these researchers using men in their studies?)
There is ONE little caveat to this study – “”Regular multivitamin users tend to follow a healthy lifestyle and have a higher intake of micronutrients, which sometimes makes it difficult to interpret epidemiologic observations on multivitamin use.”
Well, okay, that’s not so awful is it? So we generally lead a healthier lifestyle.
Following that train of logic, I say, if you aren’t taking multivitamins, then maybe you should start and you’ll soon be living a healthier lifestyle, too!
