Sobering Thoughts on Summer Drinks
June 5, 2009 by GiGi
Welcome back!
Just in time for summer – Prevention has come out with a calorie count on those fun summer drinks we all like.
Gee, thanks.
Like we didn’t already know that a “Mudslide” has about a zillion calories. Okay, 500 – 850, to be exact.
(Am I the only one that gets totally irritated with their slideshow presentation? Why can’t they just do a regular blog so you can scroll down and skim?)
But the good news is that they give some good substitutions for making lower calorie versions of the drinks at home or ways to order it with less calories. Yeah, like I’m really going to tell the bartender – “reduce the alcohol in my apple martini to 1 oz and leave off the sugar ring – but of course, I’d still be willing to pay full price.”
However, I did think the home substitutions were worth a try.
Margarita: Order tequila (1 oz.), Grand Marnier (1 oz.), lime juice, and sweet and sour mix, shaken with ice. Add a packet of zero-calorie sweetener to cut the bitterness if you wish. That’s doable.
Apple Martini: If you’re making this at home, Avanti suggests using plain vodka and adding Torani® Sugar-Free Apple Syrup.
Long Island Ice Tea: Switch to diet cola and cut the alcohol servings in half. Eliminate all added sugars and juices. Swap triple sec for orange slices to keep the orange flavor.
Piña Colada: Blend 3 oz. of fresh pineapple, 1 oz. coconut rum, 1 Tbsp Torani® Sugar-Free Coconut Syrup, 2 oz. light coconut milk, and ½ cup of ice.
Makes one 10-oz serving for 143 calories.
Mojito: In a martini shaker, combine 1 oz. light rum, 1 Tbsp lime juice (or the juice of 1 lime), 1 packet of Splenda, ½ cup club soda, and ½ cup of ice. Shake for about 10 seconds. Pour into glass and garnish with fresh mint leaves and lime wedge.
Makes one 8-oz serving for 99 calories.
Do you really want to know the calorie count of those summer drinks? Me neither. But I’ll put them down below my signature real small if you’re really curious. Otherwise, just click off.
